TAMPA: PERFECT VENUE FOR UNDERWATER INTERVENTION
Stakeholders in the Underwater Intervention Conference and Exhibition will
find Tampa, Florida to be a perfect venue for the show, according to UI
Publicity Chairman Howie Doyle. "Tampa has it all," he stated. "It is
centrally located to the eastern seaboard and the Gulf of Mexico, it has a
temperate climate, the hotel and convention center facilities are
excellent, and there is a abundance of local entertainment for attendees
and their families." UI 2001 is slated for Jan. 15-17, 2001 at the Tampa
Convention Center.
Underwater Intervention is the world's premiere underwater contracting
conference. It is co-sponsored by the ROV Committee of the Marine
Technology Society (MTS/ROV) and the Association of Diving Contractors
International (ADC). The organizations are co-sponsoring the event for the
ninth consecutive year, and once again the organizing committee expects
growth in the number of exhibits and attendees, topping even UI 2000's
enthusiastic attendance.
The east coast is an area rich in commerce involving companies using man
and machine in an underwater setting. Industries affiliated with commercial
diving, ROVs, and underwater contracting include: oil and gas, submarine
fiber optic and power cable, nuclear and hydroelectric power, bridge and
dam inspection, ships husbandry, salvage, and marine construction.
The official hotel for UI 2001 is the Tampa Marriott Waterside, a 717-room
luxury hotel which is adjacent to the Tampa Convention Center (it is a
one-minute walk from one property to the other). The hotel, completed only
three months ago, is situated on the waterfront with a stunning view of
Harbour Island. It features three restaurants, a pool and spa. For all its
opulence, the UI Committee has negotiated surprisingly affordable room
rates.
At the Tampa Convention Center, Underwater Intervention has 100,000 sq. ft.
of exhibit space available, marking a necessary leap in growth from the
traditional hotel-based exhibit areas. Exhibitors will be pleased with the
spacious dock and loading facility, which will make moving in and out much
easier than in previous years. Over two-thirds of available booths had been
booked at press time.
Also within walking distance of the Tampa Marriott Waterside is the Florida
Aquarium, an impressive facility offering a dramatic and unique look at
life on and under Florida waters. UI 2001's gala Dinner Event will be held
in the Aquarium, amidst such exhibits as an Offshore Gallery, a Coral Reefs
Grotto, and a 5,000-gallon touch pool.
Tampa International Airport, a short 10-minute drive from the hotel, hosts
14 million passengers a year through several major airlines. The area is
also served by the nearby St. Petersburg-Clearwater International Airport.
The Tampa Bay area is strong economically, and currently has 2.5 million
residents. Tampa is less than 80 miles from the Orlando area.
Underwater Intervention has expanded its Web site to include in-depth
information and hypertext links to the many convention, business, and
entertainment sources necessary to optimize one's stay in Tampa. It is
located at: http://www.diveweb.com/ui.
The recently issued Call for Papers has resulted in a strong early
response, with topics such as ROV, diver, and submersible operations;
submarine cable installation and maintenance; platform, pipeline, and
production system installation and maintenance; commercialization of AUVs,
inshore diving and ROV utilization; contaminated diving; bridge
inspections; search and salvage; safety, certification, and insurance; and
industry trends being represented.
Authors interested in submitting papers should contact Technical Program
Chairman Howie Doyle at 281-440-0278, fax 281-440-4867, or email a 100-word
abstract directly to hdoyle@doylepublishing.com. Deadline for abstracts is
Sept. 1, 2000.
Underwater Intervention is currently accepting advance registrations. To
register, call 800-316-2188, 281-893-8539, or visit the UI Web site.
