Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] hull material
If I was going to use steel for my sub, I would learn how to weld (I know
how). There are some evening classes available in most towns and it would be
very rewarding for you to take a class. The major benefit is that you can be
flexible with your design and if you ever have to add something or repair
something, you can do it yourself. In some advanced welding classes you can
become certified to various standards. Many of the welders currently out
there know very little about metalurgy, heat treatment, and various welding
standards. In fact, many welders have had no technical or classroom training
at all. That isn't to say that there aren't some very good welders out there
that have had no training. My experience though, is that if you get someone
who is qualified to do code work, the weld is usually better than the
surrounding material. If you can find a good union pipefitter/welder, who
will do the work on the side, it will be worth the effort in finding one. Be
careful who you let weld on your rig....Suds
