Re: [PSUBS-MAILIST] The First PSUBS Convention (was: psubs club sub)

Other sites of interest might be the Sandy Hook Lighthouse, also the Twin Lights
of the Highlands, where a series of paintings by Henry Luhrs (original
owner/builder of Luhrs Yachts) is on display, depicting the voyage of the Fox
(if I remember the name right), which two men rowed across the Atlantic.

Sandy Hook also has a demonstration (summertime) of the life saving service,
they shoot a line from a cannon, in the old days it was to catch in the rigging
of vessels on the rocks, then a life boat was rigged to ferry people from the
sinking vessel to land.

There is ferry service from Atlantic Highlands to Manhattan, from there you can
go to Liberty Island, Ellis Island, or any other place in NYC. (I recommend the
South Street Seaport, if you like sailing vessels and other things nautical.)

Accomodations can be very reasonable, there are public campgrounds on Sandy Hook
for any of you with a camper or a tent. Or you can go somewhere out of my
budget.

I am a Scout leader too. I know there is at least one Sea Scout Venture Crew in
the area, it might be a good thing for them to be aware/involved if P-Subs
surfaces in the area.

Needless to say there is more to do here than in Kansas. Of course having a
P-subs convention in a land locked state has a sort of ironic ring to it, rather
like singing Christmas Carols on the 4th of July, (with apologies to those of
you who are neither American nor Christian.)

Where are you, Dan?

Atlantic Highlands is the home of Simon Lake, who built subs in NJ a
century
ago. A replica of Argonaut Jr is on display there.

The idea of connecting with a high-end technical high school is great.
Perhaps
their equipment and their staff might be borrowed for construction, and
in
return we'd explain submarines to the students.

Along this line, think about associating a PSubs get-together with a boat
show, even if the only connection is a similarity of timing. All of us
like
boat shows, even if the boats can merely float on top.

Wherever it is, I'll need a ride.
